How it works

Three steps to a painting

  1. Step one

    Choose the hand

Five eras keyed to their pigments, a painter gone a century, or a modern hand described and never named. Or let the studio pick, and read the plaque.

  2. Step two

    Type the line

A few words is plenty. Three painters take the same line at once; the first to finish is the one that hangs.

  3. Step three

    Watch it hang

About 31 seconds, then it dissolves onto the canvas in the frame above. It stays on this wall for a day.

Why Painted

Painted, not filtered

Three painters, one line
Every line goes to three engines at once. The first to finish hangs; the other two are kept behind it.
Hands, dated or described
Renaissance to Ukiyo-e, each keyed to a decade and its pigments; the Moderns described by their palette, mark and surface. No living painter’s name is ever in a prompt.
The face, the dog, the house
A photograph is kept: the same person, the same markings, the same windows. Every painting is scored against the face; one that drifts is painted again, and the better of the two hangs.
Palettes, sampled
Five swatches per palette, measured from a museum scan on the shelf: a Vermeer, a Botticelli, a Turner, a Monet, a Hiroshige. Nothing is picked from a chart.
A mark, admitted
The free painting carries a small Painted mark in one corner. We would rather say so here than hide it.
